Catholic League President Bill Donohue Says Marriage is Not for Happiness or Love (Video)
During the interview, Current TV’s John Fugelsang reminded Donohue that Pope Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, once suggested that the Catholic Church should support civil unions for gay people.
“We don’t have a fanatic vision,” Bergoglio's
spokesman, Federico Wals, said in 2010. “What we are asking is that the
laws are respected. We believe that we must propose more comprehensive
civil union rights than currently exist, but no gay marriage," reported ABC News.
Donohue claimed that was a specific situation at a particular time.
idea of two men getting married is the most bizarre idea in human
history,"said Donohue. "The whole purpose of marriage is to have a
family. It’s not about making people happy. It’s not about love."
When asked about Old Testament law in the Bible regarding abstaining from pork or wearing certain types of clothing, Donohue stated: “I think there’s a little bit of difference between what kind of shirt I buy and two guys having anal sex."
